Hi Helmut,
What a fantastic reading. I'm about to build a large diy aquarium myself. Actually i have been in the planning process for 2.5 years - 3D CAD drawing, strength simulation and material considerations. I think it is really difficult to find the "optimum" DIY construction method. I have mostly thought of plywood construction but i always come to the conclusion that i cannot be sure how much stress is build up along the joints/seams. I like concrete because it is a more "dead" and stable material. However the weight is a clear drawback, and also the fact that if one is going to sell the house one day, it will be a mess to take down the aquarium. My tank will be "only" around 3000 litre, but it is very valuable for me to see how you do it and also your wall thickness and other construction details. A few questions if you have time for it 🙂
- did you vibrate the concrete ?
- I saw two layer of iron fence arming in the lower 1/3rd of the aquarium and a single layer for the rest. Is that correct ?
- What is the parameters for the iron arming fence you used ?
- You choose epoxy/fiber method for waterproofing, 4 layers. I think this will last forever. Did you consider polyester/glassfiber with topcoat ? Do you have a few words on your considerations. Also the risk of epoxy allergic reaction and the very precise mix ratio requirement. Also do you think the epoxy is easy to work with (i have limited experience with polyester only).
Thumbs up for your impressive achivement.
Best regards, Jon.

Hello Jon,

I also spent a long time planning. Nevertheless, I only made the decision to use concrete shortly before construction began. This aquarium is my only concrete aquarium. It will definitely remain my only one. So I'm definitely not a professional for concrete aquariums. That's why I got advice from a professional aquarium builder during construction. I also recommend that to you. Nevertheless, I would like to answer your questions.

- Of course, I shook the concrete over and over again with an iron bar so that the air bubbles can escape.
- I reinforced the iron reinforcement in the lower third of the walls, because the highest pressure occurs there due to the water pressure. Even though my advisor said it wasn't necessary.
- The mesh size of the steel mats is 150 x 150 mm, the thickness of the bars is 10 mm.
- A coating other than epoxy / glass fiber was never planned. This combination is used in zoos. It has to stay there for decades. Processing is not very difficult. You just have to be careful not to mix too large portions. The processing time of the finished mixture is limited. I used this resin: epoxy According to the manufacturer, it is physiologically harmless.

Best regards to Copenhagen

Wolfgang

P.S .: Who is Helmut? 😊
